Ridge capping sits on a bed of mortar, and when that bed breaks down the caps start to move. You might hear them rattle in high wind, see stepped or crooked ridge lines, or find chunks of old mortar in the gutters. Left alone, loose capping leaks, and in a bad storm it can come off the roof altogether.
